Low-Fi Futures
A Hands-On Demake Workshop
An event supported by the CHASE Doctoral Training Partnership
and part of the activity of the CHASE DiSCo network
24 September 2025
at Goldsmiths, University of London
Workshop leader
Assad Bokhari, Senior Lecturer in Games Programming & Development at UCA
Have you ever wondered what Elden Ring would look
like in 8-bit? Or how Cyber Punk 2077 would
run on a Game Boy Advance?
Through the practice of “demaking,” game developers press the
rewind button on contemporary apps and software,
promoting low-fi technical systems and aesthetics in
gaming practices.
In this workshop, you will demake your own game,
Rebuilding a contemporary game system in 8-bit and
leaving with a working proof-of-concept on a personalised
USB stick to take home for further exploration.
But also...
We will trace the history of demakes art and practice, as well
as their socio-cultural and political motivations. The practice of
demaking together celebrates open-source digital knowledge and
creativity, which critically distorts normative narratives
surrounding technological innovation.
The event is free, and no prior experience is required.
Light refreshments will be served.
